WHY CERIEF WORKS WITH YOUTHS AND CHILDREN

There is a tremendous multiplier effect when the young people are trained empowered and enabled to do ecological farming as they will be ambassadors and pass the skills and knowledge to fellow members, families and the communities where they live.

Young people are often left out of environmental conservation programmes and yet they contribute greatly to environmental degradation. Thus, CEFRIEF helps youth and children to have a greater understanding of the environment they will inherit.

Youth and children are great consumers and they play significant roles towards sustainability of the household based enterprises. They are great resource for both families and communities, they as they play an important role in all family farms and are potential driving force for change in food system. Therefore, CEFRIEF helps and enables the youth and children to have their homes and communities at heart and work for their development.

To avoid Youth Rural-Urban migration by enabling, motivating and engaging the future generation in Integrated Ecological Farming and see it as a promising career option and salvation to the youth unemployment crisis in Uganda.

To empower the future generation and acquire life skills, knowledge, develop positive mental attitude, values and skill which will help them face the challenges of adolescence.

To change young people's negative mindset and perception by showing how integrated Ecological Farming is also a progressive field and make efforts to demonstrate the links that farming has with the subjects that attract young people in schools such as agriculture, science, environmental science, organic farming and climate change.

CEFRIEF enables young farmers to meet and exchange ideas thus inspiring each other on how to practise integrated Ecological sustainable farming in a rewarding manner and they then become ambassadors to the solutions to climate change.

Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world and therefore it is crucial that the younger generation is empowered and transformed as one of the strategies for enhancing national development.

WHY CEFRIEF EMPOWERS WOMEN IN INTEGRATED ECOLOGICAL FARMING

Women are the first teachers, mentors and life coaches in the lives of us all as mothers. Thus, women help to bring up young people/future generation with great passion about farming and helping the young to have farming in their blood and embrace it forever.

Women play a major role in improving household food security, nutrition and income by growing vegetables, rearing and managing farm animals and other home based projects.

Environmental protection activities need to start right away in our homes. Therefore women play a significant role in protecting our fragile environment in their homes and extend to communities.

Men are also involved because they are key in promoting gender equality and equity

CEFRIEF PROMOTES ECOLOGICAL FARMING IN SCHOOLS

We aim to promote positive environmental conservation attitudes, deeper understanding and pride in one's school and sustainable natural resources management.

Schools are potentials areas for learning more new technologies to help with community development

To promote hygiene, sanitation, better health and nutrition

To provide career guidance and counselling to enhance social functioning and create health environment in which pupils and students are helped to make appropriate career decisions which prepare them adequately for all life challenges concerning with the world of work

Schools possess many acres of unutilized land. This helps to demonstrate and teach pupils and students ecological and climate resilient farming practices in school garden projects which also provide food for the children and staff.

Provide academic achievement like science and agriculture which are the most common subjects linked to gardens like studying weather, insects, pollination and environmental concerns.

HOW CEFRIEF IS MAKING INTEGRATED ECOLOGICAL FARMING A PROFITABLE BUSINESS TO FARMING COMMUNITIES

Making soil fertility and conservation management as crucial matter of concern. This has shown great results where food security is registered in farming communities.  CEFRIEF has realised that with Health resilient Ecosystems the results are “Healthy Soil, healthy plants, Health Food and finally healthy people”

Promoting integrated farming. Farming communities are trained, enabled and empowered to practice integrated biosystems.. In other words there is multi-functionality and connectivity in the process. The waste from one component becomes an in put or food for another part of the system. This has reduced farming costs and boosted production and income for participating families.

Promoting diversity as a key risk reduction strategy. CEFRIEF trains, enables and encourages participating families to have different fields, continuous planting, on and off-farm income generating activities to ensure continuous harvesting and food security

Zero waste management and environemental conservation. The farming communities are enabled to use the wastes products that would be pollutants to the environment such as bottles and packaging materials. So no waste is put to waste everything is used in an environmentally friendly manner. This has helped the participating farming communities to produce food in an ecological, social and economical sound manner using the 3Rs for environmental protection i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Farm planning. CEFRIEF has helped farmers in site planning ,in allocation of farm resources and putting in mind the future direction for the farming operations
